Dragon Lightning is a stand-alone book and the second in The Dragon Dreamer series. It’s a fast-paced adventure with flying dragons, an undersea world, and unlikely friendships. This science fantasy is layered for readers age 9 to adult.

Drakor seems like a normal young ice dragon with a talent for making lightning swords. But he alone feels the changing heart of his island Volcano.

It destroyed his beloved sire. Now he foresees their doom, but none will listen. As he seeks proof, the Volcano shakes him off into the frozen sea.

Arak was mocked as a worthless dreamer until he and Scree, a fearless undersea misfit, saved the dragons. Now dragons and octopi sail north in search of mythical ice dragons. They find Drakor and a terrifying reality. When Scree enters the abyss to check his volcano, she discovers everyone is in peril. Can this crew of unlikely friends save three realms?

What makes your world special or different?17125146_1855714008037533_1978839452_n

The Dragon Dreamer world is Earth-like, from an earlier geologic period, and has no humans. The dragons, octopuses, and squid are among the most advanced life. Dragon Lightning has three main characters: Drakor (a young ice dragon who has visions), Arak (a golden dragon explorer and dreamer), and Scree (a Healer octopus); other characters are also important. The world is primarily science-based and detailed, including their abilities, feasts, art, legends, festivals, and games.

How does your main character fit into this world?

Drakor, my main ice dragon in Dragon Lightning, is plagued by visions of a volcanic eruption that will destroy their island home. He’s driven to confront his powerful, dictatorial leader to convince the clan to move.

What are the people who inhabit your world like? Are they based on real-world cultures? What systems of government are in place?

The “people” are primarily dragons and octopuses, with emotions and concerns we can understand. The golden dragons have a society that is basically a true democracy, while the ice dragons have a dictatorship.

What are the two most interesting facts or features of your world?

17101676_1855715854704015_2130217396_nThe octopus characters have a different life cycle than modern octopuses, but their abilities, including shape-shifting into other creatures and color-changing to show emotions, are all based on modern octopuses. The ocean world is quite real; my work as a marine biologist helped here. Dragon abilities are partly based on recent research about birds.

What is one last thing you would like readers to know all about your world?

The Dragon Dreamer books are layered for readers age 9 to 99. These are clean science fantasy books that can span generations of readers, with 100+ reviews from people of all ages. One review mentions a 2-yr-old obsessed with the octopus heroine Scree. He’s made a Healer bag like Scree’s and wants to be an octopus for Halloween. Several reviews are from parents and grandparents. One said The Dragon Dreamer story had a “profound human message.” These books are written to have a fun, engaging story that can be read on many levels.
